On Saturday, July 20, 2024, the Rotary and Rotaract Club of Garuga hosted a transformative Maternal and Child Health (MCH) outreach at Gerenge Landing Site. This initiative brought together community members, healthcare professionals, and law enforcement officers to tackle pressing health and safety issues in the area. Dr. Margaret Nakaketo, the keynote speaker, inspired attendees with her extensive knowledge on MCH and community development.
A key component of the outreach was the distribution of essential maternal and healthcare supplies. The club donated 50 mama kits, which included sterile gloves, gauze, disinfectants, and baby blankets, to expectant mothers. These kits are crucial for ensuring hygienic delivery conditions and promoting maternal and newborn health. Additionally, mosquito nets were distributed to combat malaria, a significant health threat in Uganda, thus contributing to healthier pregnancies and safer births.
Dr. Nakaketo’s address emphasized the importance of accessible healthcare and community support in improving MCH outcomes. Her insights and the interactive session facilitated by the Community Liaison Officer left a lasting impact, equipping attendees with knowledge and motivation to advocate for better health practices.
The event also addressed safety concerns at Gerenge Landing Site. Rotarians and police officers, including Officer in Charge Kateregga Francis, engaged with village heads and community members to discuss solutions for safety issues. Topics included enhancing security measures and preventing conflicts, with a focus on the safety of women and children.
This outreach effectively covered two critical areas of Rotary International’s focus: maternal and child health and peace and conflict prevention. By integrating healthcare initiatives with peacebuilding efforts, the Rotary and Rotaract Club of Garuga demonstrated a holistic approach to community development.
The MCH outreach at Gerenge Landing Site highlights the power of community-driven initiatives. Through dedicated efforts and collaboration, the event made significant strides in improving maternal health and enhancing community safety, paving the way for a healthier and safer future.
