Rotary Club of Garuga Celebrates National DEAR Day at Bulega Primary School

On the 2023 National Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Day, the Rotary Club of Garuga held a heartwarming event at Bulega Primary School, promoting literacy and the joy of reading among students. DEAR Day, observed annually, encourages individuals, especially children, to take time out of their busy schedules to immerse themselves in a good book. For the students of Bulega Primary School, this year’s DEAR Day was not only educational but also a memorable celebration.

The Rotary Club of Garuga partnered with teachers, parents, and the local community to organize a day filled with interactive reading activities. The event kicked off with a brief introduction about the importance of reading and how it can positively impact academic performance and personal development. Representatives from the Rotary Club shared inspirational stories about the power of education and how it unlocks future opportunities.

To engage the young minds, the event included several reading stations where students could explore a wide variety of books, from picture books for the younger pupils to more advanced literature for the upper primary students. Rotarians, alongside teachers and volunteers, took turns reading aloud to the children, making the stories come alive. The highlight of the day was an open reading session where students read from their favorite books, gaining confidence and practicing their public speaking skills.

The Rotary Club of Garuga also donated a collection of books to the school’s library, ensuring that the students would continue to have access to quality reading materials long after the event. These books ranged from educational texts to fiction, aiming to cultivate a love for reading among the pupils.

In addition to the reading activities, there were interactive discussions about the importance of literacy in overcoming challenges and achieving dreams. The club emphasized that reading is not just an academic requirement but a tool for lifelong learning and personal growth.

The National DEAR Day at Bulega Primary School was a resounding success, thanks to the Rotary Club of Garuga’s commitment to literacy and community service. The event not only fostered a love for reading but also strengthened the bond between the school, the community, and the Rotary family. The smiles on the students’ faces were a testament to the impact of the day, marking a small yet significant step toward improving literacy in the local area.
