For expectant mothers visiting Nalugala Health Centre II this July, preparing for childbirth became a little less uncertain.
The Rotary Club of Garuga, through its Mawugulu Buddy Group, distributed Essential Mama Care kits to mothers from the Garuga community. The kits contained essential supplies intended to support safer and more dignified deliveries.
For many mothers, reaching a health facility is only part of the journey. They may attend antenatal appointments, prepare for delivery, and arrive at the health centre on time, yet still lack some of the basic items needed during childbirth.
It is a simple gap, but one with serious consequences.
The Mama Care kits helped close that gap by ensuring that expectant mothers had the necessary supplies before delivery. Rather than waiting until a mother arrived at the health centre without them, Rotary Garuga placed the essential items directly into her hands.
Service close to home
Nalugala Health Centre II serves families within the Garuga community. The mothers reached through the project were not strangers from a distant place; they were neighbours who depend on a health facility close to home.
That connection reflects how the Rotary Club of Garuga organizes its service. The Club works through six buddy groups: Sinde, Bugabo, Katabi, Nalugala, Bukaya and Mawugulu—each helping to turn members’ participation into meaningful community action.
For this project, the responsibility belonged to the Mawugulu Buddy Group. Its members handled the planning, procurement and distribution of the Mama Care kits while continuing to participate in the Club’s wider programme of service and fellowship.
Maternal and child health is one of Rotary’s areas of focus, but at Nalugala, it became more than a global commitment. It became something practical: essential supplies delivered to expectant mothers at the health centre they already use.
Beginning with action
July marked the opening month of the 2026/27 Rotary year and Rotary Garuga’s fifth year of service in the community.
It could easily have been a month reserved for meetings, plans and promises. Instead, the Club began with action.
At Nalugala, expectant mothers did not leave with a promise that help would come later. They left with their Mama Care kits in their hands.
